San Anselmo
We created a large indoor-outdoor area for cooking, dining and entertaining. We combined a series of small rooms, opened up the wall with French doors, and added a terrace. The interior and exterior are both paved with slate tile, to further unify interior and exterior as one continuous space.
A previous owner of this Bay Area house had left an unfinished remodeling project with a complicated permit history. When we stepped in as architects we promptly resolved the tangle of issues we found.
We freed the living room by relocating stairs to the center of the house. By combining several rooms we were able to produce a fluid kitchen/dining area open to the terrace. The combined indoor-outdoor spaces make an ideal entertainment arena where the owners can share their love of good food, wine, and nature.
The central stairway brings light into the middle of the house, consolidating convenient circulation in a bright, double-height, central space.
This Craftsman bungalow needed a larger sense of scale, and more architectural indoor-outdoor spaces. A modern approach to composition gives us coherent design with less visual clutter, further emphasizing the sense of expanding space.
