Excavation helped us increase the floor area by 50% with no increase in the exterior envelope of the house.
DOWNLOAD PDF (0.9 MB)In this renovation for a professional couple, we left the exterior envelope of the small Noe Valley Victorian as it was, and engineered more space by excavating downward, building a spacious new lower level. In the process, we built a new, code-compliant and seismically secure foundation under the whole house.
The added space allowed us to create a luxurious master bedroom suite well-suited to the needs of a couple who travel weekly for work and need a place to land. We united the new, larger kitchen with the living space. We terraced and relandscaped the rear yard. Visual continuity from inside to outside was improved, and circulation between remodeled kitchen and terrace is now ideal for entertaining.
The original Edwardian architecture was persuaded with Craftsman design elements and a Minimalist sensibility to make a much more comfortable home.
