Remodeling an old house where all the rooms were uniformly modest, we extracted from the garage a large, unencumbered space to use as the master bedroom suite. The free-flowing expanse from bedroom to dressing room to shower creates a sense of personal sanctuary.
We connected the living space to the rear yard, added windows at the top of the wall, and used shoji panels to bestow a feeling of lightness.
The Art Deco architecture of this house lent itself easily to a modern renovation. What is surprising is how natural Japanese design elements feel in this context.
“I found him enjoyable to work with and very responsive. He acted as liaison with the contractor which was reassuring for me. All and all it was a very pleasant experience.” - BD
